Frequently asked questions
Answers about generating passwords, passphrases and PINs, how the estimates work, and what stays on your device.
Where are my passwords generated?
The website generates passwords, passphrases and PINs in your browser using Web Crypto. Pressing Generate does not call the generation API or transmit the generated value. Loading this website, its assets, and a selected passphrase wordlist still makes normal requests to the server.
Does Password.lt save generated passwords?
The browser generator does not upload generated values. Optional history is held only in the current page’s memory and clears on reload. Your preferences are saved locally, but passwords and required/excluded fragments are not persisted. Downloads and clipboard copies are under your control.
What is the difference between a password, passphrase and PIN?
Passwords use random characters. Passphrases select random words from English, Lithuanian or mixed wordlists. PINs contain only digits, can be 4–12 digits long and may start with zero. Choose the format accepted by the service where you will use it.
Why are similar characters excluded by default?
The website excludes l, I, 1, O and 0 from new password settings to make values easier to read and type. You can change this under Advanced settings. This option does not apply to PINs: zeroes and ones remain valid PIN digits.
What does the estimated crack time mean?
It is an illustrative average brute-force model: 2^(entropy − 1) divided by 10 billion guesses per second. The assumed speed is a scenario, not a measured benchmark. Password hashing, hardware, rate limits and other defenses can change the real time substantially. The generator uses a conservative entropy estimate and does not estimate constrained fragment policies. It is not a guarantee of safety.
Can the clipboard always be cleared after 60 seconds?
After you use a copy button or the copy shortcut, the site requests clipboard read access so it can verify that the value still matches before clearing it. Keep this page open. Permission restrictions, an unfocused tab, browser throttling or closing the page can delay or block clearing. The site leaves a different clipboard value untouched. It cannot clear operating-system clipboard history or synced copies.
How do custom symbols and unique batches work?
Custom symbols replace the default punctuation group when Symbols is enabled. Leave the field blank to keep the defaults. Only printable ASCII punctuation is accepted, and ambiguous-symbol exclusions still apply. The unique option prevents duplicate values within one batch; it does not compare against history or passwords generated elsewhere.
Which keyboard shortcuts are available?
Ctrl+Enter generates with the current settings, and Ctrl+Shift+Enter copies the result or whole batch. On a Mac, use Command in place of Ctrl. Ordinary copy shortcuts retain their normal browser behavior.
Do the API and MCP server also generate in my browser?
No. The HTTP API and MCP server generate values on the server and return them to your client. MCP clients and their providers may retain values in history or logs. Use the API and MCP sections on the homepage for connection instructions.
Why can a generation request fail?
The selected character sets, minimum counts, fragments or unique batch size may be incompatible. For example, a policy with only one possible value cannot produce two distinct results. Reduce the count or widen the allowed settings. Passphrases also need the selected wordlist to load successfully.
